Constructing a Universe
Outline of the Creation Process
Prior to
the creation of a universe, we have a situation where nothing physically
exists, not even empty space.
Theosophy
postulates that at this stage both consciousness and matter do exist in
potential but are in a state of Pralaya. A universe has existed before and this
state can be called obscuration, rest or non-being.
A rough
analogy could be the gathering of a football crowd, which exists for duration
of a game and disappears but still exists in potential and will appear for the
next game. Another analogy is the human achievements such a
books, music and building yet to be produced but at present only exist
in potential.
To get
the show on the road, this creative potential starts to wake up with the
interaction of hitherto unmanifest consciousness and
latent matter.
Here
are two Sanskrit terms used by Theosophists to help you take the study
further:-
Parabrahman (Unmanifest Consciousness)
Mulaprkriti (Root Matter)
This
Consciousness or Spirit and Matter are opposite poles of the same thing and
spirit now exerts its influence on the matter.
In
affecting matter, spirit expresses itself in 3 aspects which are referred to by
Theosophists as the Triple Logos (Plural Logoi). Logos is a Greek word used to
describe the personification of order in the universe.
These
are:-
First
Logos – Will
Second
Logos – Capacity
Third
Logos – Activity
There
is now a 3 stage movement as the Logos swing into action, this is known as the
3 outpourings. The Logoi operate in reverse order with the Third Logos going
first.
1st
Outpouring – 3rd Logos – Activity. This is known by the Sanskrit term Fohat which creates the seven planes of nature form the Logoic down to the physical

Outpouring – 2nd Logos – Capacity. Builds form from the basic matter of the now existing
planes of nature. The Kingdoms of Nature are established
3rd

This takes place at the point in which the

universe now exists and will run its course (Manvantara) and return to a state of rest or obscuration
(Pralaya).
