So what is Theosophy anyway ?
The
word is derived from Ancient Greek and means “Divine Wisdom”. This doesn’t tell
us much and a more practical definition might be “The Study of Existence”.
Within the
Theosophical Society, this study of existence goes beyond the remit of
scientific study and also investigates metaphysical and religious ideas in
addition to what would be termed occult phenomena and paranormal powers.
Theosophy
also has a more specific meaning within the Theosophical Society and refers to
the ideas about the coming into existence of man and the universe presented for
consideration by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky in her definitive work, The Secret
Doctrine, and in her other writings.
Blavatsky’s
ideas were based principally on Brahminical Hinduism
and Esoteric Buddhism and her mission was to interpret eastern religious
thought for the western mind.
