Theosophy is not a religion
Let’s get that one straight
O.K. so
the word Theosophy sounds like a religion to many people and we’re classed as a
religious organization in the Yellow Pages because they can’t find anywhere
else to put us, but we don’t make it as a religion in several key areas.
Firstly,
we have no creed or articles of belief. We only require our members to agree
with the “Objects of the Society” which is effectively our mission statement.
These
are the Objects of the Society
1. To form a nucleus of the
Universal Brotherhood of Humanity without distinction of race, creed, sex,
caste or colour.
2. To encourage the study of Comparative Religion, Philosophy and
Science.
3. To investigate unexplained laws of Nature and the powers
latent in man.
Secondly,
we have no dogma. Ideas presented at meetings are purely for consideration.
Speakers at Theosophical meetings can be questioned and their ideas disputed.
Theosophical writings such as the Secret Doctrine are not regarded as works of
scripture.
Thirdly,
a member of the Society may be a member of any religion or none.
We do
not claim to own Theosophical ideas or to possess the only truth or the only
way to the truth.
